Summary

Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher or a colleague。 Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it。 For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago。

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded。 Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you?

Mitch Albom had that second chance。 He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life。 Knowing he was dying of ALS - or motor neurone disease - Mitch visited Morrie in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college。 Their rekindled relationship turned into one final 'class': lessons in how to live。

I was worried about making my reading quota this month as I had a lot of books I started but either will not finish by end of June or will not finish ever。 This book was the slimmest one that I had sitting on my shelf, and I knew it had a reputation for being very popular。 I didn't realize how old it was (written back in the 20th century!), but the message is eternal。 I'm glad that I had read Lisa Genova's "Every Note Played" about ALS, as it gave me much greater familiarity with Total Honesty? It’s a heart warming memoir。 The conversations between Morrie and Mitch touch upon several aspects of life。 However, most of the things discussed are now “popular” comments on our generation’s fast paced life。 Despite this, the fact that Morrie was dying and the narrative style of the author managed to turn these messages into a memoir that makes you reflect on life。

4。5 For the first half of this book, I must admit that I wasn’t thoroughly impressed。 The premise of Morrie Schwartz, an old man fighting terminal ALS sharing wisdom in his final moments sounded like an easy tear-jerker。 Unfortunately, these supposed life lessons seemed to be dictated in the “in-your-face” style typical to self-help books that I was never a huge fan of。 However, as the book progressed and Morrie seemed pushed further to the edges of his mortality, his words, shared in those inst 4。5 For the first half of this book, I must admit that I wasn’t thoroughly impressed。 The premise of Morrie Schwartz, an old man fighting terminal ALS sharing wisdom in his final moments sounded like an easy tear-jerker。 Unfortunately, these supposed life lessons seemed to be dictated in the “in-your-face” style typical to self-help books that I was never a huge fan of。 However, as the book progressed and Morrie seemed pushed further to the edges of his mortality, his words, shared in those instances of great vulnerability moved me。 Perhaps exactly because he was so accepting of death—something that had always been my personal big fear, that his words grew in substance。 ”Death is as natural as life。”Acknowledging this finality seemed to create a tunneling vision in which he was able to regard death—and consequently life, in ways that I, often clouded by the shadows of my fears, couldn’t。 ”That’s what we’re all looking for。 A certain peace with the idea of dying。 If we know, in the end, that we can ultimately have that peace with dying, then we can finally do the really hard thing。 Make peace with living。”I closed this book with a lot of heartfelt tears for the man who in the face of death, taught so much about life ❤️ 。。。more

6。7I feel like an asshole writing this review, but that's never stopped me before。Let's start with the good, because I didn't think it was a bad book。 The premise is simple but great。 Conversations with a dying person (a professor at that) is a great opportunity to reflect on life。 Also, to make a book readable despite such a basic premise is a feat in itself。A lot of this had to do of course with Morrie。 Morrie seems like a likeable dude。 This book felt like hanging out with a likeable dude and 6。7I feel like an asshole writing this review, but that's never stopped me before。Let's start with the good, because I didn't think it was a bad book。 The premise is simple but great。 Conversations with a dying person (a professor at that) is a great opportunity to reflect on life。 Also, to make a book readable despite such a basic premise is a feat in itself。A lot of this had to do of course with Morrie。 Morrie seems like a likeable dude。 This book felt like hanging out with a likeable dude and that's never a bad thing。 However, most of the focus of the book was about Morrie's little nuggets of wisdom, and in this lies my first major complaint。Morrie is not that wise。 I'm sorry yall, but he's just not。 Granted, he isn't necessarily always saying things that are wrong, but his insights aren't particularly insightful。 Forgive yourself? Show compassion towards others? Materialism bad? If this book was written sometime before Christ (or B。C。 if you will) then it could have been potentially mind blowing to a small warring tribe that just discovered bartering but had yet to gather psychedelic mushrooms。 The fact that this was published in 1997 makes it seem unsophisticated and a bit cultish。Which brings me to my next major complaint。 Why write it then? Yeah, the proceeds went towards medical care for Morrie (but Mitch had money and Morrie was a Medicare beneficiary)。 And yeah, legacy blah blah blah, but I'm sure every dead person has a story to tell。 I won't explicitly give my opinion because that would cross a line of asshole that I'm not ready to reveal to the Goodreads public, but I don't get the sense that this was written for purely virtuous reasons。This read a bit like a cult manual and a self help book, but the ideas weren't even the manifestation of the author himself。 I gave it 3 stars because it's a good book and it's a good book because Morrie is a good dude。 But it's still a book, and a book has to be written by someone。 I'll leave it at that。 。。。more

This story is all about morrie who is harbingering his death any day。 Though Morrie's condition leaves you in melancholy, the way he sees life opens up a new perspective on how we see life。。。。The #line I loved the most in this book, " Learn how to die, and you learn how to live。"。 This story is all about morrie who is harbingering his death any day。 Though Morrie's condition leaves you in melancholy, the way he sees life opens up a new perspective on how we see life。。。。The #line I loved the most in this book, " Learn how to die, and you learn how to live。"。 。。。more

Reading this 20th Anniversary Edition of Tuesdays with Morrie changed my life and heart。 I read this book when it came out 25 years ago, long before ALS touched my life。 I am now eight years into the role of caregiver for my husband with ALS。 While I love my husband dearly, my empathy often shifts to my demanding role。 Rereading this book gave me a fresh perspective to see my husband's daily challenges with more compassion。 A book is not often easy to read yet profoundly changes your thinking an Reading this 20th Anniversary Edition of Tuesdays with Morrie changed my life and heart。 I read this book when it came out 25 years ago, long before ALS touched my life。 I am now eight years into the role of caregiver for my husband with ALS。 While I love my husband dearly, my empathy often shifts to my demanding role。 Rereading this book gave me a fresh perspective to see my husband's daily challenges with more compassion。 A book is not often easy to read yet profoundly changes your thinking and feeling。 Tuesdays with Morrie is one of those books。 I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires more empathy and a better grasp of the true meaning of selfless love and what matters in life。 。。。more

i really enjoyed this book! i thought that the story was simple and sweet, but the ending was the best bit。 you spend the whole book getting to know the characters so thoroughly, and by the end you can really see the development in mitch’s character (and potentially the reader’s), as well as the bittersweet decline in morrie’s health。 i came out of it feeling warm and like i wanted to share life lessons with those around me。 i was also fully sobbing in public for maybe the last 10 pages lol。 4 s i really enjoyed this book! i thought that the story was simple and sweet, but the ending was the best bit。 you spend the whole book getting to know the characters so thoroughly, and by the end you can really see the development in mitch’s character (and potentially the reader’s), as well as the bittersweet decline in morrie’s health。 i came out of it feeling warm and like i wanted to share life lessons with those around me。 i was also fully sobbing in public for maybe the last 10 pages lol。 4 stars instead of 5 as i found it to be quite repetitive during the middle, but i guess that’s kind of the point。 i definitely got something good out of it :) 。。。more

What a brilliant story of man's final days spent teaching a young man about life! This is a powerful book about how to live, love, and die。 Morrie's lessons are simple yet profound, and Mitch Albom's writing is beautiful and moving。 Tuesdays with Morrie is a book that everyone should read。Even Though I'd admit sometimes the story goes at a slow pace, I believe it's because Albom wants to make sure readers understand each and every word Morrie is saying。 Many people might think this book is depre What a brilliant story of man's final days spent teaching a young man about life!
